Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 2,   Pages 378-389 doi: 10.1007/s11709-021-0706-z

Abstract: In this study, we conducted experimental tests on two specimens of reinforced concrete beams using a three-point bending test to optimize the flexure and stiffness designs. The first specimen is a reinforced concrete beam with an ordinary reinforcement, and the second specimen has an invented reinforcement system that consists of an ordinary reinforcement in addition to three additional bracings using steel bars and steel plates. The results of the flexure test were collected and analyzed, and the flexural strength, the rate of damage during bending, and the stiffness were determined. Finite element modeling was applied for both specimens using the LS-DYNA program, and the simulation results of the flexure test for the same outputs were determined. The results of the experimental tests showed that the flexural strength of the invented reinforcement system was significantly enhanced by 15.5% compared to the ordinary system. Moreover, the flexural cracks decreased to a significant extent, manifesting extremely small and narrow cracks in the flexure spread along the bottom face of the concrete. In addition, the maximum deflection for the invented reinforced concrete beam decreased to 1/3 compared to that of an ordinary reinforced concrete beam. The results were verified through numerical simulations, which demonstrated excellent similarities between the flexural failure and the stiffness of the beam. The invented reinforcement system exhibited a high capability in boosting the flexure design and stiffness.

The cooperation effect of Ni and Pt in the hydrogenation of acetic acid

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 3,   Pages 397-407 doi: 10.1007/s11705-021-2076-4

Abstract: The catalytic hydrogenation of carboxylic acid to alcohols is one of the important strategies for the conversion of biomass. Herein, a series of Ni-doped PtSn catalysts were prepared, characterized and studied in the hydrogenation of acetic acid. The Ni dopant has a strong interaction with Pt, which promotes the hydrogen adsorption, providing an activated hydrogen-rich environment for the hydrogenation. Meanwhile, the presence of Ni also improves the Pt dispersion, giving more accessible active sites for hydrogen activation. The cooperation of Pt and Ni significantly promotes the catalytic activity of the hydrogenation of acetic acid to ethanol. As a result, the catalyst with 0.1% Ni exhibits the best reaction activity, and its space time yield is twice as that of the PtSn/SiO2 catalyst. It provides a meaningful instruction on the catalyst design for the carboxylic acid hydrogenation.

Research on the flotation of kaolinite using a series of dodecyl tertiary amines

Cao Xuefeng,Liu Changmiao, Hu Yuehua

Strategic Study of CAE 2011, Volume 13, Issue 1,   Pages 93-97

Abstract:

The flotation performances of four tertiary amines (DRN, DEN, DPN and DBN) on kaolinite were studied in this paper. All the four tertiary amines show very good flotation effects on kaolinite, and DEN does the best, with the highest flotation recovery of 92 %. In the acid pH scale, four tertiary can float kaolinite well because their cationics absorb onto the surface of kaolinite by electrostatic force; with the increasing of pH, the content of cationics was decreased to result in the lower flotation recovery. On the basis of Zeta potential, the surface of kaolinite is mainly electro-negative in the whole pH region, and its Zeta potential is remarkable increased after kaolinite was affected by four tertiary amines. Both the results of FT-IR spectra and Zeta potential show that four tertiary amines are absorbed onto the surface of kaolinite by electrostatic force. The flotation differences of four tertiary amines are due to the electronic effects and space steric effects of the substituents belonging to N atom in the amine molecule.
